This volume continues in the wake of the work "Visual Guide to Architecture in the Ancient World". On this occasion, it focuses on part of the Middle Ages. The historical period begins with the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the year 476, a certainty or conventionalism that is hardly discussed in the face of an ever-open debate as to its end, for some 1453 (the fall of Constantinople), for others 1492 (the arrival of Columbus in America). In any case, it represents both a continuity and a radical change in an essential protagonist in architecture: the "house of God". The change of religious paradigm will incorporate complex terms that encompass a great multitude of elements. The house of God, the basilica, the church or the mosque mark the architectural discourse that is based on centuries of building techniques. Such an extensive period requires setting both spatial and temporal limits. The geographical areas analysed are located in Europe, Asia and Africa. In terms of chronology, the 'Guide' begins in late antiquity and then continues with the Paleochristian world, Byzantium, the 'barbarian' and pre-Romanesque art forms and ends with Islamic architecture. Each of the elements that define the typological peculiarities of each architecture is analysed in depth, with a general introduction at the beginning of each block explaining the spatio-temporal context, which will allow us to situate ourselves geographically and chronologically. We would like to express our gratitude to the hundreds of authors who have enlightened us with their work and made this work possible.
