This book shows the work of female botanical scientific illustrators from the 17th century to the present day and highlights the involvement of these women in the dissemination of biology through their works, produced using different techniques such as drawings, engravings, photographs, paintings and books. Content, history, sociology, culture, technique and aesthetics are brought together in these pages to showcase the life and work of more than thirty classic female authors, thus providing an account of and a reason for the relationship between art, science and gender. The selection presented here shows the commitment of these women to the processes of disseminating knowledge and demonstrates how in their work science can be art and art can be science.
