Miró
With an artistic career that spanned seven decades, Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893-Palma de Mallorca, 1983) was a polymath titan of modern art who created masterpieces in creative disciplines as different as painting, sculpture, art books, tapestries and ceramics, and assimilated artistic influences as varied as Fauvism, Surrealism, Dadaism, magic realism, Cubism and abstract art.
Throughout his prodigious creative activity, Miró never ceased to evolve, attempting to circumvent the categorisation of his art and the approval of bourgeois art critics with the same impetus with which he sought his own dream worlds.
Miró, who came into the public sphere in the early 1920s, first experimented with Fauvism and Cubism before developing his characteristic style of symbols and pictograms in mysterious visual narratives in which references to Catalan life were frequent.
As his career progressed, Miró turned towards Surrealism and, although he never fully identified with this movement, he became one of its most recognised representatives with techniques such as automatic drawing, lyrical abstraction and chromatic field painting. In later years, he diversified his materials and worked with ceramics, textiles and cast iron.
Through his vivid colours, dreamlike fantasies and enigmatic symbols, this book covers the many facets of Miró's kaleidoscopic oeuvre to present his fascinating career, his interaction with the main modern movements and the gestation of a legend of modernity.
