Maruja Mallo and the Spanish Vanguard
Biography of one of the most original and important women in the history of Spanish artGifted with a talent that allowed her to combine multiple facets (among others, those of painter, art teacher, ceramist, illustrator, essayist, stage designer or jewellery designer), Maruja Mallo (1902-1995) is one of the most original and important women in the history of Spanish art.
Friend of such outstanding figures as Salvador Dalí, Federico García Lorca, Pablo Neruda and Ramón Gómez de la Serna; the only woman in the Vallecas group and whose sentimental relationship with Rafael Alberti was very important for both of them, as was her friendship with Miguel Hernández; energetic, brilliant, free, and transgressive with a fearsome sense of humour and full of appeal, between 1922 and 1936 she astonished and scandalised the society of her time, although no one disputed the quality of her work, impregnated with surrealism and also charged with a darkness that seemed to presage future disasters.
The civil war, which shattered so many dreams, drove her into exile; in America she was reborn with large canvases in which geometry and nature blend in mysterious harmony.
Her return to Spain in 1965 marked a bittersweet period in which the character, halfway between the present and the past, was on the point of devouring the artist. An artist who, always hermetic about her personal life, used to declare: "My biography is in my painting".
