Artists' Chalk

Artists' Chalk and Drawing Pencils for Fine Art

Working with artists' chalk sticks allows you to capture light, shadow, and line weight with a technical immediacy that few materials can match.

Traditionally used for anatomical study and quick sketching, this selection of chalks stands out for its high concentration of pure pigments on a clay base, ideal for achieving soft transitions and intense gradients.

Chalks for Painting and Drawing

Essential color range: sanguine, sepia and white chalk.

To approach life drawing or master the three-color technique, having the right shades is essential:

Sanguine chalk: Reddish and earthy tones bring warmth, volume, and depth to the human figure.
Sepia chalk: The ideal choice for building deep shadows, structured layouts, and chiaroscuro effects.
White chalk: Essential for reclaiming highlights and creating contrast on mid-tone or kraft paper.

Formats:

Depending on the level of precision required by the artwork, it is best to alternate between traditional sticks and encased formats:

Carrés and chalk sticks: Their square cross-section allows for broad tone application using the side, or sharp lines using the edges.
Chalk pencils: Encase the same wood formulation, providing greater detail and definition for fine drawing and intricate details.

Recommendations:

To get the most out of your painting chalks, we recommend working on medium-grain or rough paper with a minimum weight of 98 lb (160 gsm).

Upon completion, it is best to apply an acid-free aerosol fixative to prevent dry pigment wear over time.

At Hartem, we stock leading brands such as Conté à Paris or Cretacolor, packaged with breakage protection so every stick arrives in perfect condition.
