Sailor Pen Company
Sailor fountain pens
In 1911, the Sakata brothers opened a workshop in Japan to make gold nibs. It was the beginning of Sailor Pen, the brand that introduced the world's first fountain pen with a 21-karat gold nib in 1969.
Today, Sailor fountain pens are still a go-to among Japanese fountain pens for anyone who writes, draws, or practices calligraphy.
What makes Sailor fountain pens different from other brands?Which pen is right for the way you work?
- The Professional Gear is Sailor's flagship line. Its 21-karat gold nib offers smoothness with a bit of spring, which comes in handy whether you're signing your name or sketching in ink.
- The 1911 collection, introduced in 1981, is known for its well-balanced body and its 14- or 18-karat gold nibs. The Shikiori editions are inspired by Japan's seasons.
- If you're just getting started, the Sailor Lecoule and the Hi-Ace Neo are an affordable way to try Sailor fountain pens.
- The Sailor Hocoro is a lightweight dip pen with a 1 mm nib or a Fude nib. Since it has no reservoir, you can switch colors just by rinsing it. That means you can use calligraphy or illustration inks without risking your fountain pens.
Plus, the Fude nib changes the line width depending on the angle.

Sailor inks, bottled ink, cartridges, and converter
Sailor's pigment inks Kiwaguro, Seiboku, and Souboku are water-resistant once dry. You'll see the difference in illustration: ink your drawing, add watercolor on top, and the line won't budge.
A 1.7 fl oz ink bottle paired with a piston converter is more economical over time. Cartridges get you out of a jam when you're working away from the studio.
Because it's a pigment ink, clean the pen with water regularly to keep the flow consistent.
Sailor ballpoint pens
If you'd rather write without liquid ink, Sailor ballpoint pens from the Professional Gear and 1911 series offer the same finish as their fountain pens. The multifunction Refino D and Metalino pens combine several functions in a single barrel.
