Produced in collaboration with the Musée Rodin, this essential introduction examines the key works of Auguste Rodin, the innovative French sculptor and author of The Kiss and The Thinker. With rich illustrations and illuminating text, we explore his modelling and composition, as well as his innovative ideas on movement, bodily expression and the influence of chance.
Sculpting life
When marble and clay become humanised
Rooted in the tradition of Antiquity and the Renaissance, Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) paved the way for modern sculpture. From an early age he was interested in movement, bodily expression, the influence of chance and the appeal of the unfinished. It was these elements that gave form and a sense of life to such famous works as The Kiss or The Thinker. Produced in collaboration with the Musée Rodin, this introduction to TASCHEN's Basic Art 2.0 series examines Rodin's formative years and the key stages of his career, reviews the genesis of his sculptures and monuments from historical and aesthetic points of view, and sheds light on the links between his various works. The reader becomes familiar with the artist's ideas and his system of studio work: modelling in clay, the transition from plaster to bronze or marble, the enlargement of forms and the composition of ensembles, as well as the profound sensuality of his erotic drawings. Rodin has been an inexhaustible source of inspiration for the generations that followed him. His work embodied innovation and transgression, but above all an unparalleled passion for working with real models and capturing the truth of forms and human experience.A beautifully illustrated edition with texts by François Blanchetière invites us to discover, and rediscover, a legacy of incalculable value.
