An extraordinarily prolific artist, Norman Rockwell (1894-1978) painted around 4,000 paintings during his lifetime, not counting an extensive list of editorial, commercial and advertising commissions. His death in 1978 was seen as the loss of a national icon, the passing of an artist who celebrated the American dream like no other.
Rockwell, who eschewed experimentation and avant-garde techniques in favour of effective composition and subject matter with which the public could identify, created down-home paintings replete with moral values that blended the everyday and accessible with desire and aspiration.
Neat, picturesque and usually jovial, his subjects included school classrooms, prom scenes and Thanksgiving celebrations. He regularly illustrated the calendars and covers of The Saturday Evening Post magazine, as well as the front pages of Boys' Life, published by the Boy Scouts of America, one of the nation's largest youth scouting organisations. Brimming with optimism and patriotism, his work foregrounds classic professions such as doctors and teachers, as well as the conservative values of the military, family and religion.
Praised by former US President Gerald Ford as "a beloved part of the American tradition," Rockwell's works reflect both his artistic talent and the history of 20th-century America.
