Modigliani
As well known for his turbulent love affairs as for his characteristic nudes of elongated women, Amedeo Modigliani is a legend of early modernity.
This introductory book presents key works from his signature repertoire of stunning portraits and arched, languid nudes.
In endless odes to the female form, Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) traced elongated bodies, almond-shaped eyes and his own name in art history. His languid women are instantly recognisable, as well as dazzling and sensual, with their swan-like necks.
Modigliani's unique figuration responded to his personal idea of beauty, although he drew on a variety of visual influences, including contemporary Cubism, African carvings, Cambodian sculptures and the 13th-century painting of his native Italy. Although most famous for his female nudes, he applied similar stylistic techniques to portraits of contemporary male artists such as Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau and Chaïm Soutine.
Featuring key works from his highly distinctive repertoire, this book presents Modigliani's brief but revered career in the heart of the hotbed of early modern art that was Paris.
