Can a city as well known as Madrid hide unanswered questions? From the intricate streets of Lavapiés to the massive Cuatro Torres, the capital has been portrayed a thousand times by photographers, painters, writers and Instagramers. But beneath this postcard layer there are still hidden traces of the Arab past that resists the disappearance of tram tracks and the surprising journeys of water. And then there are places that remain a secret, such as the hidden viewpoint of El Retiro, sumptuous hidden palaces and terraces with unexpected views. In my walks around the city, I have come up with all kinds of questions: What is the oldest building in Madrid? What does Saint Valentine's Day have to do with the capital? Is there a place where you can buy books by weight? What is behind the façade of number 13 Huertas Street? What are those rails that remain on the corner of Atocha Street? This book aims to answer these and other questions and to trace a route full of history, curiosities, nuances and details through the unique and surprising Madrid that makes me fall in love with it every day.
