The book on the Black Paintings not only shows the exceptionally singular place that Goya occupies in Yves Bonnefoy's critical and poetic reflection, it is also a highly expressive sample of the particular hermeneutic style that the essays on art and poetry put into practice. Trained as an art historian, connoisseur and admirer of the French historiographic tradition, Yves Bonnefoy bases his interpretation of the work on the knowledge of history, philosophy, myths or religions, in order to re-establish the multiple determinations, from the historical and biographical circumstances to the conceptual and imaginary structures that circumscribe it in the horizon of his time. However, already in the book's prologue, Bonnefoy anticipates that he will not act as a conventional critic. The essayist's position exceeds the demands that challenge traditional criticism and to which it cannot fail to respond. From outside that tradition, although without omitting it, what interests the poet is to revive Goya's presence, to give him the floor and establish a dialogue with him on a timeless plane, in which he will try to find answers to the questions that go beyond his own creation.
