Gaudí The Complete Works
The life of Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926) was complex and contradictory. In his youth he joined the Catalan nationalist movement and was critical of the Church; towards the end of his life he devoted himself entirely to the construction of a spectacular church, the Sagrada Familia. As a young man, Gaudí led a glamorous social life worthy of a dandy. At the time of his death, run over by a tram in the streets of Barcelona, he was so shabbily dressed that passers-by thought he was a vagrant.
Gaudí's incomparable architecture is an example of the complexity of its many facets. From the gleaming surfaces and organic forms of Casa Batlló to the Hispano-Arabic matrix of Casa Vicens, his unique modernist style shows influences of orientalism, natural forms, new materials and religious faith. Even today, his aesthetic is recognised throughout the world. His masterpiece, the Sagrada Familia, is the most visited monument in Castile and seven of his architectural creations have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Through new photographs, plans and drawings by Gaudí himself, historical images, as well as an appendix detailing all his works (from buildings to furniture, from decoration to unfinished projects), this book presents Gaudí's universe as never before.
As if it were a private tour of Barcelona, we discover how the Dante of architecture was a builder in the truest sense of the word: he erected extraordinary buildings with hypnotic details and transformed his fantastic visions into reality in the streets of the city.
