De Lempicka
Tamara de Lempicka (1898-1980) lived art at full throttle. Attracted as much by glamour and fame as by the bohemian spirit of the Rive Gauche in Paris, she fled St. Petersburg after the Bolshevik revolution and set out to conquer the French capital. Her prolific and colossal oeuvre remains one of the most vivid documents of 1920s art deco.
Lempicka's style features cool colours and post-cubist forms in a composition that is at once neoclassical and voluptuous. Her subjects, often nude, are always sensual, distant and powerful. His models, enveloped in seductive light and textures, attract our attention, but shy away from our gaze with an attitude that is certainly haughty. He painted members of high society as well as emancipated women and lesbians, as in Women Bathing and Portrait of Suzy Solidor.
His famous Self-Portrait in a Green Bugatti, on the other hand, was commissioned for the cover of the German magazine Die Dame and became an icon of speed, sophistication and female independence.
Through some of her most accomplished and irresistible portraits, this book on Tamara de Lempicka explores the artist's unique visual language and her relevance not only to interwar art, but also to the history of women artists and our collective memory of the Roaring Twenties.
