The Mysterious Case of the Murder of Modern Art: 07 (Cahiers) J Montes english
We have a hundred pages to solve a mysterious case, a crime that was committed a century ago and in which a mortal blow was dealt to Modern Art and what we call Contemporary Art was born.
The body of the crime: the work Criadero de polvo (1920). The main suspects: Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray. The murder weapon: a large pane of glass, a camera, specks of dust. The motive: to turn the artist-medium into an artist-Midas.
Through this essay, articulated in the style of a classic detective novel, we may not find the real murderer, but along the way we will better understand a key moment in the History of Art, when the figure of the Author and the notion of the Work radically changed, its relationship with concepts such as Time, Chance or Beauty, and its very constitution: what art is, who makes it and where, when it is produced, why we call it that.
