The Lives of the Most Excellent Italian Architects, Painters and Sculptors
Giorgio Vasari (Arezzo, 1511-Florence, 1574) is one of the greatest exponents of the Cinquecento through his pen, not his brush. "The Lives, published in Florence in 1550 by the ducal publisher Lorenzo Torrentino, are an undisputed masterpiece and an essential written source for anyone who wants a direct approach to the Italian Renaissance and its protagonists. Giorgio Vasari was and wanted to be a historian first and foremost, and for this reason he did not content himself with narrating the events that took place without including judgements and criticisms, but also liked to "distinguish the good from the mediocre, the excellent from the good, and to make careful mention of the particularities, styles, features and fantasies of the painters and sculptors". This text can therefore be considered the inaugural work of Art History. This annotated edition, which reproduces the 1550 edition in its entirety, is supplemented by an index of names and an index of places and works, which makes it easier to locate the works referred to by Vasari.
