Renoir
One of the great protagonists of the Impressionist movement, Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) remains a leading figure in the history of art while continuing to appeal to the public. Bathed in sunlight, enchanting and sensual, his work is a showcase of the most joyful and luminous painting, and a champion of plein air painting and the colour innovations of his time.
Renoir was a prolific artist, with several thousand paintings produced during his lifetime. Strongly influenced by innovative artists such as Courbet, Degas, Manet and Delacroix, he worked with contemporaries such as Monet in exploring new uses and applications of colour, achieving texture and depth from loose brushstrokes. Attracted by intimate and tender scenes, his most recurrent subjects included lovers, mothers and numerous nudes.
As his career progressed, Renoir experimented with different styles and techniques, moving away from the ethereal Impressionist touch towards a more classical and robust corporeality, what has sometimes been described as his "Ingres period", and later towards monumental pieces such as Les Grandes Baigneuses.
From the abundant output of his long career, this essential book on Renoir selects the artist's key works to explore his innovations in the art of painting, as well as the tradition behind his quest for the representation of beauty, harmony and the female figure.
