Rembrandt's complete pictorial oeuvre
The genius of the Dutch Golden Age in XL-format
The Golden Age of Dutch painting produced some of the greatest artists and craftsmen in history, but few can boast the genius and legacy of Rembrandt Harmensz. Van Rijn (1606-1669). Despite never having left his native Holland, Rembrandt elevated his work beyond the limits of his own experience, and created some of the most varied and striking works of art, whether portraits, biblical and allegorical scenes, landscapes or genre works. Whatever the format, Rembrandt's paintings are woven with subtleties: every wrinkle in the face, every glance or feature conveys an emotional power unparalleled among his contemporaries and disciples.
Each work is imbued with humanity. Biblical scenes, such as Bathsheba's Bath, become an avenue for reflection on longing and the human soul, and go beyond what is canonised in scripture or depicted in other representations. His portraits, whether of patrons or wealthy merchants, communicate the essence of the individual through delicate, distinctive features, with their faces bathed in an ethereal light against backgrounds of earthy tones. Perhaps the most striking aspect of his series of self-portraits is the very triumph of this format or genre. Rembrandt began painting them in his youth and continued to do so until a year before his death, and they reveal the introspective process that accompanied him throughout his life.
This XL-size monograph brings together all 330 of Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn's paintings in exquisite reproductions. The present volume shows Rembrandt's paintings as never before, from The Feast of Balthasar to The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp.
