Madrid As A Work Of Art Writings On Photography In The Spain Of Ramón Gómez De La Serna (1911-1947)
Photography as seen from Madrid, at the time of the artistic avant-garde.
There are many worthy histories of ôavant-gardeö photography in Spain.
This one is different. Its centre is not in Barcelona, but in Madrid, and its protagonists are not called Salvador Dalí and Pere Català i Pic, but Ramón Gómez de la Serna, Miguel de Unamuno, Vicente Salas Viú, Luis Bello, Josep Carner, Mauricio Amster, Cecilio Paniagua, Esteban Salazar Chapela, Máximo José Kahn, Ernesto Giménez Caballero, Manuel Abril, Fernando Vela and even Antonio Cánovas del Castillo, another Cánovas del Castillo; names, many of them, of whom hardly anyone remembers today and who do not usually appear in the usual histories of photography.
The anthology comprises forty-nine texts, including newspaper articles, book chapters, poems, news items and letters, on photography in Spain in the first half of the twentieth century, thirty of which have been published here for the first time since their original publication date. Many of the photographs illustrating the text are also unknown.
