Mixing colours in watercolour

Become a master capable of reproducing, with 11 tones, the colour you want, extend your chromatic range as far as your imagination will take you and obtain expressive and powerful colours.

Isabelle Roelofs and Fabien Petillion propose to start from the basics of colour mixing to gradually conquer the spirit of watercolour: the essential knowledge of watercolour pigments, the characteristics of colours, the basics of colour theory, the various techniques for mixing colours.

A step-by-step guide to creating your own palettes 4 yellows, 3 reds and 3 blues are the starting point for mixing colours freely so that by combining them in pairs, secondary colours and tertiary colours, among many others, will naturally emerge without having to do a lot of research.

To these 11 colours you can add, at your discretion, other colours suitable for your artistic expression or for the theme you have chosen and thus create your own personalised palettes.

The last part shows the artists at work: four watercolourists create, using the 11 initial colours, thematic colour palettes adapted to as many subjects taken from reality - flowers, landscapes, portraits and animals - and paint various works from each of them. Fabien Petillion analyses five watercolour paintings and unravels the mysteries of how their colours were created and how the works were painted.
