History of press graphics 1819-1921
This book and its extensive collection pay homage to the golden age of press graphics as a unique and distinct genre and a laboratory for the development of avant-garde aesthetics.
The collection covers a wide range of press illustrations and political and satirical cartoons published between 1819 and 1921. Here you will see works by renowned artists such as Jean Cocteau, Juan Gris and Käthe Kollwitz, but also a rich representation of the most famous illustrators of the period: Thomas Nast, Honoré Daumier, Gustave Doré, and the many relatively unknown graphic artists, the so-called special artists, whose production is rediscovered here.
The book also explores the attention Vincent van Gogh devoted to the illustrated press of his time. He was inspired not only by its artistic dimension, but also by the spirit of social reform it represented. An avid collector, Van Gogh possessed a wealth of graphic press material and came to regard it as an "artist's bible".
