Hilma af Klint: Basic Art Series J Mink english
Hilma af Klint painted as if she were channelling the universe. Fascinated as a child by botany and mathematics, she began her career painting landscapes and portraits, but inside her there were other concerns: questions about the spirit, invisible energies, patterns too vast for the human eye.
Her art is inseparable from her spiritual practice. Together with a circle of women artists called The Five, she held séances, listened to the voices of the 'Higher Masters' and drew inspiration from the Theosophical Society and the theories of Rudolf Steiner. She worked tirelessly to map the hidden dimensions of life, painting to the point of physical exhaustion.
As early as 1906, his canvases showed radiant geometries of spirals and orbs, imbued with symbols, letters and words, which anticipated the later abstraction of Kandinsky, Malevich, Mondrian and others. His vast pictorial cycles - such as the Temple Paintings and The Ten Greatest - often depicted dualities: inner and outer, earthly and esoteric, male and female, good and evil.
Af Klint, who was a vegetarian and questioned the rigidity of gender identities, was ahead of her time, but she also lived deeply embedded in it and was virtually ignored during her lifetime. Her prodigious output remained hidden for decades, locked away of her own free will. It was not until the 1980s that the world began to recognise her as a true pioneer of abstract art.
This book delves into her visionary universe through a luminous selection of works and a detailed essay that distils her complexity. Her previously secret universe is thus revealed before our eyes.
