One of the foundational books in feminist art history. This truly pioneering book offers a radical challenge to an art history in which women are in short supply. The authors' critique of sexism in the discipline leads to new, expanded, inclusive readings of the art of the past. Throughout, they show how the changing social-historical realities of gender relations, as well as the transposition of gender conditions by women artists in their work, provide keys to understanding in a new light why and how we can study the art of the past. And they go further, to show how this knowledge allows us to understand the art of contemporary women artists, thus contributing to changing the creative work and the perception that artists have of themselves today.
