"For me it's really about the joy of looking at the world and receiving that positive energy.... It's opening up our vision and how we look."-David Hockney
When David Hockney discovered the iPhone as an artistic medium, it opened up completely new possibilities for his art. He made his first digital paintings in the spring of 2009, depicting the morning landscape with broad strokes and dazzling colours directly on a screen that offered subtle tones as pure expressions of unblended light. Then, in 2010, Hockney began working with an iPad, and the larger screen expanded his artistic repertoire, allowing him an even more complex interplay between colour, light and line.
Each image in this book captures a fleeting moment seen through a window in Hockney's Yorkshire home: from vibrant sunrises and lilac morning skies to quiet evening impressions or the sudden arrival of spring. Fascinating details reveal drips on panes of glass, distant lights in the night, reflections in vases or abundant greenery on windowsills.
In 120 paintings made between 2009 and 2012, selected and arranged by the artist himself, we experience the passage of time through David Hockney's eyes.
This artist's book, which first appeared in an exclusive signed edition in 2020, now returns in a more accessible paperback edition. So this is the perfect occasion to take The Times reviewer's advice about this book: "If you've ever wanted to receive a bouquet of flowers from David Hockney, here's your chance".
