Copic Color System:

On the cap and base of your Copic Sketch you will find an alphanumeric code (for example: B24). Understanding it will help you create seamless gradients and professional combinations without mistakes.

1. Letters = Colour family. They indicate the main chromatic group (English abbreviations):

  • B (Blue), R (Red), Y (Yellow)
  • BV (Blue Violet), RV (Red Violet), YG (Yellow Green)
  • E (Earth)
  • C (Cool Gray) / W (Warm Gray) / N (Neutral Gray) / T (Tonal Gray)

2. First digit (0 to 9) = Saturation. Measures how vibrant or muted the colour is:

  • 0 - 2: Pure, clean, vibrant and saturated colours.
  • 3 - 6: Intermediate and soft tones.
  • 7 - 9: Muted, desaturated colours or with greyish undertones.

3. Second digit (0000 to 9) = Brightness. Measures how light or dark the tone is:

  • 0000 - 2: Very light tones, ideal for highlights and bases.
  • 3 - 6: Medium tones for colouring.
  • 7 - 9: Dark tones, ideal for deep shadows.

Copic trick for seamless gradients

To achieve a smooth gradient without streaks, combine markers that have the same letter and the same first digit, changing only the second digit:

Example: B21 (light) + B24 (medium) + B28 (shadow).
