Sailor Pen Company
Sailor fountain pens
In 1911, the Sakata brothers opened a workshop in Japan to make gold nibs. That workshop gave rise to Sailor Pen, the brand that in 1969 introduced the world's first fountain pen with a 21-carat gold nib.
Today, Sailor fountain pens remain a benchmark among Japanese fountain pens for anyone who writes, draws or practises calligraphy.
What sets Sailor fountain pens apart from other brands?Which pen should you choose for the way you work?
- The Professional Gear is the brand's flagship line. Its 21-carat gold nib combines smoothness with a degree of spring, something you appreciate as much when signing as when sketching in ink.
- The 1911 collection, launched in 1981, stands out for its well-balanced body and its 14- or 18-carat gold nibs. The Shikiori editions are inspired by the Japanese seasons.
- If you are just starting out, the Sailor Lecoule and the Hi-Ace Neo are an affordable way to discover Sailor fountain pens.
- The Sailor Hocoro is a lightweight dip pen with a 1 mm nib or a Fude nib. As it has no reservoir, you can change colour simply by rinsing it. That way, you can use calligraphy or illustration inks without putting your fountain pens at risk.
The Fude nib also varies the line width depending on the angle.

Sailor inks, ink bottles, cartridges and converter
The pigmented inks Kiwaguro, Seiboku and Souboku are water-resistant once dry. You can tell in illustration: you ink the drawing, apply watercolour over the top and the line stays put.
The 1.8 fl oz ink bottle, used with a piston converter, works out cheaper in the long run. Cartridges get you out of a fix when you are working away from the studio.
As it is a pigment ink, clean the pen with water regularly so that the flow stays consistent.
Sailor ballpoint pens
If you prefer to write without liquid ink, Sailor ballpoint pens from the Professional Gear and 1911 series share the finish of their fountain pens. The multi-function Refino D and Metalino pens combine several functions in a single barrel.
