• Tempera formulated by Gustave Sennelier in 1895, is an emulsion of natural products. It is based on the recipes of the 16th century masters and is composed of egg yolk, pure non-yellowing vegetable oil, gum arabic, natural balms for the agglomerate and selected pigments (mainly mineral pigments).
• These colors are ground “the old fashioned way” with stone grinding wheels, respecting tradition. This ancient recipe gives the tones an exceptional freshness and great luminosity.
• Tempera colors are diluted with water and dry quickly, providing a matte-satin film. They are generally applied in thin layers that can be superimposed, but they can be painted in texture, preserving the brushstroke pattern. The unctuous consistency of Tempera provides a fluid brushstroke.
• Tempera applied lightly facilitates overlapping and its covering power is remarkable.Tempera color is applied on canvas, wood, cardboard... and above all support properly prepared with a grease-free preparation.
• It is possible to retouch a canvas started with Tempera with oil paint. After drying for several months, the work can be varnished, either with gouache varnish, to preserve it in its initial state, or with a varnish for oil painting if you wish to give the Tempera the appearance of oil painting.
